ABOUT THE BREED LABRADOR

Why a labrador?

Characteristics:

The breed is known for their dependable good nature, and love of human companionship which perhaps more than anything else has made  them so popular as pets today.

You must control this breed's tendency to chew on objects and to mouth your hands -- provide a box filled with toys that the ycan carry around in their mouth.

The Labrador Retriever matures slowly, remaining a spirited teenager for several years, which sounds fun... but does require patience and training to manage.

Exercise:

Labradors need to be given enough vigorous exercise (preferably including swimming and fetching games) and not just a walk around the block once a day.

Trainability:

Family dog:

The Labrador Retriever is a terrific family dog. One of the best dogs for children of all ages, Labrador Retrievers are kindly, good-natured, and take most things in stride.

Original Purpose:

The Labrador falls into the category of ‘gundog breeds’ of dog.   It is this original purpose as a gundog that has forged many of the Labradors’ fundamental characteristics.

The Labrador is first and foremost a retriever.   His role as such is to remain close to his master at all  times, until required to retrieve an animal or bird that has been shot.

Anything he is asked to do, including retrieving gently to hand, he is expected to do willingly, unquestioningly, and quickly.  The Labrador’s highly co-operative  and intelligent temperament reflects that role perfectly.
